Transformation of a former private swimming pool into a retreat with atmosphere and a fireplace

An exclusive lounge area was created in the basement of a residential building from the 1960s – replacing an aging indoor swimming pool. The challenge: low ceiling height, existing basement ambience, and a complex structural situation. The result: through the combination of architectural clarity and energetic sensitivity a atmospheric space, in which the original basement feel has completely disappeared.
A careful Well-thought-out concept combining materials, lighting, and spatial effects made this possible: gray mirrors on the walls and ceiling give the room a sense of space and depth. Untreated natural wood, fine textiles, and a hand-applied spatula technique on the floor create a tactile, grounding atmosphere. Underfloor heating with a particularly low installation height was installed so that no further room height had to be sacrificed.
The lighting was deliberately staged: indirect light sources, targeted recessed floor lights and a well-thought-out lighting concept support the visual opening of the space and emphasize the cozy elegance of the new lounge area. State-of-the-art technology was used to equip the project with an integrated audio system and an EIB-controlled smart home installation.
A fireplace should also enhance the room – however, a classic wood-burning stove was not feasible due to the lack of an exhaust air duct. A generously designed ethanol fireplace, which gives the room additional warmth and presence
This inspiring retreat shows how, with sensitivity and innovation, even challenging spaces can be completely reimagined and, by integrating the energy-efficient architecture can also have an effect on a subtle level: grounding, opening, connecting.
