Renovation of a single-family home with a special focus on atmosphere and materials

Year of manufacture: 1990s

Planning and renovation: 2016–2017

Garden design: 2018–2019

On the quiet outskirts of Herzogenaurach, a single-family home from the 1990s was carefully transformed into a harmonious and warm living space with a distinct character. Across approximately 180 sqm of living area, the existing potential was revealed and thoughtfully reinterpreted—guided by the intention to create a coherent environment that radiates calm, clarity, and a sense of comfort.

The design approach followed the principle of achieving maximum impact with minimal intervention. Existing structures were respected and gently refined, while materials were consciously reduced and carefully selected. The result is a finely balanced interplay of functionality, naturalness, and understated elegance.

A key technical enhancement was the complete integration of a new air conditioning system, ensuring a comfortable indoor climate throughout the house and significantly enhancing the overall living experience.

A particular highlight is the individually designed wine cellar—a space that reflects the owner’s passion while creating an intimate and atmospheric retreat. Fully climate-controlled and clad in solid wood, it combines functionality with a rich, sensory material presence. It is a place of calm and enjoyment—authentic, reduced, and timeless in its expression.

The project was complemented by the complete redesign of the garden. With approximately 500 sqm, the outdoor space is intentionally modest in scale—yet refined and carefully composed. A curated selection of solitary trees, sculptural iron spheres, and an integrated outdoor shower create a quiet and contemplative landscape that extends the architectural concept into nature.

For this garden, a bespoke outdoor furniture collection was designed and crafted in close collaboration with selected carpenters and interior specialists. The result is a seamless connection between architecture and landscape—subtle, intentional, and deeply rooted in material and form.

This project demonstrates how, through clarity of intention and a mindful use of resources, spaces can emerge that go beyond pure functionality: places with soul, centered around the human experience, carrying a quiet and enduring quality.
