A subtle transformation of a single-family home, with a focus on a sense of space and atmosphere

Year of manufacture: 1960s

Living area: approx. 160 sq. ft.

Planning and renovation: 2025–2026

Nestled in the Mallorcan countryside, a 1960s single-family home has been transformed into a peaceful, light-filled retreat through a careful, cosmetic renovation. Across approximately 160 square meters of living space, the home’s existing potential was revealed and reinterpreted using a deliberately minimalist approach—with the goal of creating a sense of spaciousness, lightness, and a harmonious overall aesthetic.

A key aspect of the design was opening up and expanding the existing, previously fragmented spatial layout. Cramped rooms were merged, sightlines were created, and the spaces were reconfigured to flow seamlessly into one another. The result is a fluid spatial structure that is now characterized by clarity and spaciousness.

The design follows a soft, understated aesthetic. Light pastel tones, natural materials, and soft textures define the interiors, creating a warm, tranquil atmosphere. A delicate balance of Scandinavian clarity and Mallorcan warmth lends the house a timeless, relaxed elegance.

The house serves as a weekend retreat for a couple from Palma—a place to escape city life and find peace in nature. It is a house that is not loud, but rather makes an impact through its quiet presence, offering a space for retreat, relaxation, and rejuvenation.

The renovation was carried out in 2025–2026 in close collaboration with local craftsmen. With a deliberately limited budget, the focus was on the targeted enhancement of the existing structure and the sensitive use of materials and space.

This project demonstrates how clarity in design and a mindful approach to the existing environment can create spaces that transcend their functional purpose—as places of tranquility, balance, and a sense of belonging.
