Complete renovation of the old city caretaker's house

One of Herzogenaurach's oldest half-timbered houses—the former city caretaker's house—stood empty and forgotten for a long time, and no one wanted to buy it. The rooms were dark, some only 6.5 feet high, and the attic under the old roof truss had a clearance height of just 5.2 feet. It was clear from the outset that only a comprehensive renovation would help here.

The goal was to create two separate residential units—with plenty of character and respect for the historic structure. The location was exciting: the building was directly on the old city wall built, which still forms the outer wall today.

In terms of design, a lot of reclaimed wood was deliberately used to preserve the house's unique character. Black glass surfaces add modern accents and create a reflective effect optical space enlargements – particularly effective in rooms with low ceilings.

The house was also a challenge in terms of energy efficiency. Long periods of use over generations had left their mark. A geomantic guidance was an important part of the restructuring process.

Today, the house, which was in dire need of renovation, has been transformed into a cozy gem—with a private living area and a planning office. A quiet retreat in the middle of the city, with a special atmosphere and a lot of history.
